UWS Recap: Tough Weekend For Rough Riders, Surf

UWS, United Women's Soccer, UWS, Long Island Rough Riders, New York Surf

It was a disappointing weekend for the local United Women’s Soccer (UWS) teams as neither the Long Island Rough Riders or New York Surf could grab a victory.

A thorn in the sides of both local clubs was the Rochester Lady Lancers. On Saturday, the team from Upstate New York defeated the Rough Riders 2-1 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Rochester’s Elin Eklund was the offensive star of the match for Rochester as she scored twice in the first half to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Long Island would battle back and cut the lead in half as a goal by Kayla Saager in the 75th minute would give the Rough Riders hope. But the Lady Lancers held on for the victory.

Also on Saturday, New York Surf traveled north to Agawam, Mass., and earned a point in its 2-2 draw with New England Mutiny.

The first half belonged to New England as goals from Sydney Brackett and Kate Howarth gave the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead. But during the half, New York head coach Christie Welsh made the needed adjustments. Surf would cut the Mutiny lead in half thanks to Melissa Menta’s 67th-minute goal. Ten minutes later Furtuna Velaj’s second goal of the season would draw the match level.

On Sunday, Surf returned to New York looking for some home cooking, but the Lady Lancers had other ideas. Rochester’s 2-0 win gave them a six-point sweep from its trip to the Metropolitan Area. One-time Stony Brook Seawolves star Brooke Barbuto scored twice in the first half to lead the Lady Lancers to victory.
