Two Long Islanders are among 99 high school soccer players nationwide to be named to the 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s High School All-America teams.
Included with the 56 boys recognized nationally is Witman Hernandez, a senior at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station. Hernandez completed his final high school season by leading Whitman to a New York State Class AA Championship. During the team’s 5-1 win over Ballston Spa in the title game, Hernandez scored 2 goals and assisted another.
In addition, Hernandez was named Newsday’s Long Island player of the year in boy’s soccer. A video interview with the Whitman soccer star is available at Newsday.com.
On the girls side, Jillian Colucci, a junior at Earl L. Vandernuelen High School in Port Jefferson, was among 43 girls named an All-American.
Similar to Walt Whitman, Port Jefferson finished its season with a state title, winning the Class C crown with a 3-1 win over Elmira Notre Dame.
Colucci played a major role in the championship game assisting on Port Jefferson’s first goal in the 22nd minute and then extending her team’s lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 59th minute.
