SUSA FC Nets Two WPSL Honors

SUSA

For the second consecutive year, the WPSL is honoring SUSA FC with recognition for the team’s head coach and the franchise as a whole.

In the league’s 2019 Best of the WPSL awards, SUSA FC’s head coach J.R. Balzarini was named Coach of the Year. Also, SUSA shared Franchise of the Year honors with New York Athletic Club

This was the second year in a row that SUSA received the pair of honors for play in the WPSL’s East Region-Metropolitan Conference.

“As a staff, we are proud of the work we put into our WPSL program and humbled to be recognized by the rest of the league members,” said Balzarini. “We cannot achieve these awards without hard-working, committed players, dedicated staff members and the organizational support to continue to provide Long Island females this opportunity to play in the largest women’s league in the world.”

Offensive Player of the Year honors went to Furtuna Velaj of New York Athletic Club. Velaj in prior years played for New York Surf in United Women’s Soccer. Eveljn Frigotto of NJ Wizards FC Cedar Stars was named Defensive Player of the Year.

This past season, SUSA FC finished in third place in the Metropolitan Conference with a record of 4-3-1. Three members of its WPSL team over the past two years have also gone pro. Lindenhurst’s Claudia Cagnina and Melville’s Christina Bellero recently signed to play professionally with Football Femminile Lugano 1976 of Switzerland’s Lega Nazionale A. Also, East Northport’s Kristin Desmond is joining Sion Swifts FC of Northern Ireland.
