St. John’s MSOC Falls To UCSB In Season Opener

St. John’s men’s soccer opened its 2018 season out west, falling to UC Santa Barbara 2-0.

With the match scoreless through the first 40 minutes, UCSB broke through as Carter Clemmensen scored in the 41st minute. The Red Storm kept the Gauchos close until the 71st minute when Michael Rodney would extend Santa Barbara’s lead to 2-0.

UCSB outshot the Red Storm 12-5 with the St. John’s Skage Simonsen registering three of the team’s five attempts, one of which was on goal. Lenny Wilson played the full 90 minutes in goal for St. John’s, making two saves in the process.

According to the match report, nine members of the Red Storm’s starting XI made their St. John’s debut on Friday, including seven players who registered their first appearance in a Division I game. Overall, eight freshmen took to the pitch for the Johnnies.

St. John’s will return to action on Sunday, facing off against Loyola Marymount. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
