The accolades for NYIT’s soccer programs rolled in this week with two members of the men’s soccer team were honored by the East Coast Conference.
Forward Bernd Schlüter, who combined for five goals against Nyack and District of Columbia, has been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman Wilber Gomez of Bay Shore, who tallied the game-winning goal in the final minutes against UDC, has been named ECC Rookie of the Week.
In addition, goalkeeper Andrew Pereira of Mineola — who had a series of dramatic saves in the match against UDC, the ECC’s preseason favorite — was named to the league’s weekly honor roll.
Schlüter, a graduate student from Everswinkel, Germany, has scored in five straight matches. He had a hat trick in a 5-1 win at Nyack on Wednesday and followed that performance by scoring the opening two goals in the Bears 3-2 win against UDC as NYIT improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the ECC. Schlüter’s eight goals this season are tied with LIU Post’s Lukas Ostermann for the ECC lead.
Gomez’s first collegiate goal came at an opportune time. After UDC had pulled even at 2 with a pair of second-half goals on homecoming Saturday at President’s Stadium, Gomez took a pass from Xavi Senlik of Ronkonkoma in the box and scored in the 86th minute to propel the Bears to the victory.
The men’s soccer team awards cap a big week for the NYIT soccer community. The women’s team swept the ECC weekly honors with Casey Luongo named the Offensive Player of the Week, Jessie Sabal the Defensive Player of the Week and Maggie Thibault the Rookie of the Week.
