A trip out west proved to once again to an elixir for New York City FC as the visitors from the Big Apple topped Seattle Sounder 2-0 at CenturyLink Field.
Ronald Matarrita scored his first Major League Soccer goal and Frank Lampard hit the back of the net for the second straight match to secure the win for New York City.
The former Chelsea man, who battled injuries through the first part of the season, put NYCFC in front in the 38th minute. Finding space in front of the Seattle net, Lampard chested a pass from RJ Allen past Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Matarrita put the finishing touches on a huge road win three minutes from full time, lofting a pass from Mikey Lopez past a helpless Frei, who came out to challenge David Villa following a Seattle turnover.
In May, New York City ventured west to Portland and defeated the defending MLS Champion Timbers 2-1 at Providence Park.
The victory, the team’s league leading fourth road win, puts NYCFC in second place in the Eastern Conference two points behind Philadelphia Union and one point ahead of New York Red Bulls. Up next for NYC is the Red Bulls on July 3 at Yankee Stadium.
