NYCFC Sets Preseason Camp Roster

Vieira, NYCFC

New York City FC is off to Florida for its preseason training camp, but the team’s 28-man roster heading to Jacksonville has two notable omissions.

Mix Diskerud and Josh Saunders will not be with the team as NYCFC begins preparations for the 2017 season, which kicks off in early March. In announcing the roster, the team did not make reference to the two players.

Diskerud, who was one of New York City’s major signings heading into its 2015 inaugural season, fell out of favor with head coach Patrick Vieira in 2016 and saw no playing time in the back half of the season as the team qualified for the post season. Saunders was the team’s starting goalkeeper for much of the 2016 season, but did not start the team’s two playoff matches vs. Toronto FC.

Among those who will be in camp for the first time will be new signings Miguel Camargo, Sean Johnson and Sean Okoli along with SuperDraft picks Jonathan Lewis, Kwame Awuah, Jalen Brown, Chris Wingate and Michael Degraffenreidt. In addition, U.S youth international and NYCFC academy prospect James Sands will also join the team.

“I’m very excited to be returning to the field after the offseason break,” Vieira told “As a coaching staff, we’re all feeling ready to begin our preparations for our second season together. It’s a really young, dynamic and exciting group of players to be working with and I’m especially looking forward to welcoming in the new players who I know will bring a lot to this group.”

NYCFC face Jacksonville University in a scrimmage game on February 2 before the team flies to Ecuador for the first official friendly on February 8.

he Citizens will open its 2017 schedule on March 5 against their former head coach Jason Kreis and Orlando City SC at the newly-constructed soccer-specific Orlando City Stadium, which will be hosting its first Major League Soccer match. Kickoff is 5 p.m.

A week later, New York City will open its home slate as it welcomes DC United to Yankee Stadium for a 2 p.m. kickoff. NYCFC have won both of its home meetings with DC, 3-1 and 3-2 in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
