Set for Sunday, February 27, at 10 p.m. at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, the match features two teams that have championship lineage in their respective leagues.
The Earthquakes, which take their name from the NASL team that played in San Jose from 1974-84, have won MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003 and two Supporters’ Shields in 2005 and 2012. The Cosmos have won seven NASL titles, with the most recent coming in 2013 and 2015. In the 10 year period in the original NASL, the Cosmos and San Jose/Golden Bay Earthquakes played 13 times, with New York winning eight and losing five.
“The New York Cosmos have a great history and we first played them in the 1970s,” said San Jose Earthquakes President, Dave Kaval. “We look forward to welcoming them back to San Jose ahead of the 2016 season.”
Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said the San Jose match will be part of a busy pre-season for his team as it begins defense of its NASL championship.
“Not only will the Earthquakes be a great test for us as we return from the offseason, but we are also looking forward to playing in Avaya Stadium, known for one of the best atmospheres in the country,” he said.
The Cosmos will announce further preseason fixtures in the coming weeks as the 2015 champions prepare for the 2016 NASL season, which begins in April.
