The Molloy women’s soccer team is moving on to the East Coast Conference finals following its 4-1 win on penalty kicks over the University of Bridgeport.
Played Thursday night at Knights Field in Connecticut, the Lions improved to 13-4-2 on the season. The match between Molloy and Bridgeport ended in a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time. The Lions will now travel to New York Tech to face the Bears on Sunday.
The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Dana Poetzsch of Hicksville in the 12th minute and Eleni Sofroniou of Dix Hills in the 48th minute.
However, Bridgeport would battle back with goals from Andrea Basilicato in the 52nd minute and Roose Ariyo in the 78th minute.
After neither team could find a goal in extra time, Molloy dominated penalty kicks.
Poetzsch and graduate student Daria Castrogivanni of Commack converted their penalty kicks while Lions keeper Jackie Carty of East Islip stopped both attempts by the Purple Knights.
Lexi Verni of Patchogue added another successful penalty kick while Bridgeport found the back of the net to set the score at 3-1.
Junior Jessica Mauro of South Hempstead sealed the game after finding the back of the net in the fourth round of penalty kicks.
Carty made nine saves in goal for Molloy.
