It was a big week for several Long Islanders who received weekly soccer honors from the Skyline Conference.
On the men’s side, Bay Shore’s Anthony Sblendorio, a junior at SUNY Maritime was named the conference’s Player of the Week, while Zack Lysakowski, a freshman at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, was named the Skyline Rookie of the Week.
Farmingdale State was well represented on the women’s side as Rams goalkeeper Daniella Ford of Elmont was named Player of the Week and her teammate, freshman Julissa Martinez, was named to the Skyline Honor Roll.
Sblendorio scored the first goal for the Privateers in the fifth minute of the season opener against Webb Institute on Aug. 31. He then added two more goals in the 82nd and 83rd minute to complete the hat trick as Maritime defeat Webb 14-0.
Lysakowski received Rookie of the Week accolades following USMMA’s 2-0 win over Hartwick. He opened the scoring in the sixth minute heading in a set piece just inside the right post. The goal was the first of his college career.
At Farmingdale State, it’s been a strong start to the season for the women’s soccer team. Ford of Elmont posted a pair of clean-sheet victories in extra time for the Rams, who defeated Buffalo State 1-0 and RPI 1-0.
Her teammate, Martinez of Brentwood, earned a spot on the Skyline Honor Roll after scoring the game-winning goal in Farmingdale State’s first two wins of the season. Against Buffalo State, she scored from the penalty spot with less than six minutes remaining in the second overtime, and a day later netted the winning goal against RPI just 46 seconds into overtime.
