The LIU Post men’s soccer team has advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II Championships and could meet up with a familiar foe.
Following the Pioneers 1-0 win over Mercy College on Saturday, the green and gold now await the winner of Sunday’s match between Adelphi and Wilmington. Should Adelphi advance, the Panthers and LIU Post would play for a spot in the quarterfinals. The date, time and location of that match has yet to be determined.
The Long Island rivals met to open the season on August 30. Adelphi won that match 2-1.
In Saturday’s second round match vs. Mercy, the Pioneers once again found themselves in a defensive battle. With the match scoreless into the final quarter hour, a freshman would prove to be the hero. Paul Hein’s header in the 78th minute would prove to be the only goal LIU Post would need on a blustery day at Pioneer Soccer Park.
Pioneers keeper Oliver Hessner Hansen would make three saves to earn his ninth clean sheet of the season. The win over Mercy was also the fifth straight match Hansen has not allowed a goal.
