Following a week in which the Binghamton women’s soccer team had clean sheets in a pair of home wins, the team also set a bit of school history.
For the first time since joining the America East conference 17 years ago, the Bearcats swept the weekly conference awards. Senior striker Kayla Saager of East Islip was named Offensive Player of the Week, freshman keeper Haylee Poltorak of Massapequa earned Defensive Player of the Week and freshman defender Kayla MacKenzie of Highland Mills, NY, received Rookie of the Week honors.
Saager scored three goals in two Bearcat wins during the week, raising her conference-best total to eight goals in 2018. She scored the game-winning goal in overtime to beat Bryant 1-0 and then added two second-half goals in Binghamton’s 4-0 win over LIU Brooklyn.
Saager has scored five goals in her past four games and also was named Binghamton’s Athlete of the Week for the second time this fall.
Poltorak notched two shutouts on the week and has now posted three consecutive shutouts. She made two point-blank saves against Bryant to help send that game to overtime scoreless. Poltorak lowered her season goals-against average to 0.61 and raised her season save percentage to .865.
MacKenzie was a stalwart on a BU back line that limited Bryant and LIU to 10 combined shots in the pair of shutouts. She also broke through for her second goal in three games to open the scoring in a 4-0 win over LIU.
