Nick Berneri was the offensive star for the Lindenhurst Bulldogs as the team from Suffolk County’s south shore topped New York Surf Long Island 4-0 to capture the Boys U-14 State Open Cup Final.
“We started to trust one another and move the ball and that led us to the championship,” said Jason Garguilo, Lindenhurst’s coach. The match against Surf was played June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y.
Keeper Sean Ronessi earned the clean sheet in goal for Lindenhurst, which is captained by Joey Blackton and Matt Star.
The Bulldogs also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials.
Lindenhurst will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 29 to July 3 in Spotsylvania, Va., as part of the National Championship Series.
