Behind a three-point game from freshman Carly Credidio (Farmingville) the St. Joseph’s College (L.I.) women’s soccer team defeated SUNY Old Westbury, 2-1, in a Skyline Conference showdown on Tuesday evening at Danzi Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-4 (3-0 Skyline).
St. Joseph’s opened the scoring in the second minute when Credidio played a through ball from 40-yards out which found Christina Gagliardi (Ronkonkoma) whose left-footed, one-touch finish gave the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Old Westbury would draw level in the 12th minute when Ashley Onofre delivered a pass to Nicole Jones and was able to strike it home after a defensive miscue by the Golden Eagles.
Continuing to pressure OW’s defense, Mackenzie Nyitray (Franklin Square) in the 34th minute lobbed a pass over the streaking Credidio and the freshman midfielder was able to slot the ball into the lower left corner for her fourth goal of the season.
Despite outshooting the visitors 16-3 in the first half, the Golden Eagles carried a slim 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles outshot Old Westbury 10-5, but neither team could find another goal. St. Joseph’s keeper Karissa Rutigliano (Coram) played the first 45 minutes and had one save while Juliana Cintron-Leonardo (Riverhead) had five saves in the second half.
