Week 3 of the United Women’s Soccer season includes a home game for New York Surf as they welcome Inferno Rush to SUNY Maritime in the Bronx.
Last week, Surf was forced to forfeit its home match against the Western New York Flash as the SUNY Maritime field was double-booked. The team kicked off its second UWS season the week prior with a 1-0 win on the road over the Worcester Smiles.
During the 2017 UWS season, Surf and Inferno Rush (formerly known as Lancaster Inferno) split their two-game series with each team winning at home. On June 4th in their home opener, the Inferno held on for a 2-1 win after a late rally from the Surf.
In the reverse fixture, Surf defeated Rush 3-1. New York scored early in the match as forward Talani Barnett headed in a cross from forward Sara Plowman in the 14th minute. In the 58th minute, Surf doubled its lead and scored what would prove to the game-winner as forward Maegen Doyle took a pass from defender Trista Seara in the middle of the box, popped the ball into the air and bicycled her shot past Inferno keeper Kelly O’Brien. In the 65th minute, midfielder Furtuna Velaj notched the third goal on a chip over the keeper’s head.
