The New York Cosmos are on to the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup following its thrilling 2-1 win over Black Rock FC Wednesday night.

In a week when international soccer had its share of late, dramatic goals, the Cosmos joined the party. Bledi Bardic’s header six minutes into stoppage time proved to be the game-winner and would send the crowd at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium home happy.

New York had an opportunity to take the lead in the 12th minute when Black Rock was whistled for a handball in the penalty area. Danny Szetela sent his kick from the spot to the lower right but keeper Leland Gazo made the save.

The game’s first goal came in the 28th minute. A cross from Giuseppe Barone found Aaron Dennis who slotted home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The goal was the third in three matches for Dennis.

The Cosmos maintained its narrow one-goal lead until the 87th minute. Black Rock’s Komar Martinez-Paiz’s would find the back of the net to level the match.

The match appeared headed to extra time before Bardic’s late goal proved to be the difference.

New York will face Hartford Athletic (USL Championship) in the U.S. Open Cup second round at Al-Marzook Field at the University of Hartford. The match on Tuesday, May 14, is set for a 7:30 p.m.
