Adelphi Tops Merrimack To Win NE10 Title

For the second time over the past three years, Adelphi’s men’s soccer team is the Northeast-10 Conference champions.

The second-seeded Panthers defeated No. 4 Merrimack 2-0 Sunday at Motamed Field. The win also gives first-year head coach Gary Book his first championship with the Adelphi.

Alessandro Corti and Paolo Marciano each scored for the Panthers. Senior All-Conference forward James Thristino of Port Jefferson Station assisted on both goals.

Corti broke a scoreless tie in the 22nd minute as he knocked Thristino’s blocked shot past Merrimack keeper Tyler Packett. Marciano, the NE10 Rookie of the Year, scored the insurance goal in the 86th minute.

AU goalkeeper Matt Apicella earned the clean sheet making seven saves. Merrimack outshot the Panthers 22-13.

Corti was named Most Outstanding Player for the championship tournament overall. Apicella and Patrick Guier joined him on the All-Tournament team, with the former making 18 saves in the tournament overall.

With the victory, the Panthers earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament field. The full field will be announced on Monday night on NCAA.com.
