It was a strong freshman campaign for Westbury native Carlo Ritaccio who helped anchor the defense for the University of Akron, which made a run to the NCAA Men’s College Cup Finals.

Ritaccio is now being honored by TopDrawerSoccer.com, which named him its National Freshman of the Year. He was also named to its Freshmen Best XI First-Team

A 2018 Second-Team All-Mid-American Conference performer, he started all 22 matches in which he appeared for Akron at his center back position and was a key member of the Zips’ defensive unit that posted eight clean sheets this past season. Ritaccio also contributed a trio of goals on the strength of nine shots, including four on goal. One of those goals came in Akron’s 5-1 win over Michigan State in the National Semi-Finals.

Ritaccio is the latest Akron freshman to receive TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Freshman Team accolades. Among the past winners are currently Major League Soccer players Joao Moutinho (2017) of Orlando City SC; Dillon Serna (2012) of Colorado Rapids; Perry Kitchen (2010) of LA Galaxy; Darren Mattocks (2010) of DC United; and Evan Bush (2005) of Montreal Impact.
