Hofstra junior Matthew Vowinkel notched his second hat-trick in three games to lead the Pride to a 3-0 win Saturday night over Northeastern at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The win clinched the No. 3 seed for Hofstra (8-6-2, 5-2-1 CAA) in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Championship. The Pride will meet Delaware this Friday in Harrisonburg, Va. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
Against Northeastern, the junior from New Hyde Park scored in the 26th minute, 79th minute and 83rd minute to secure his hat-trick.
Vowinkel’s three-goal performance against Northeastern caps a remarkable three-game run in which the Chaminade High School graduate had scored eight goals; three vs. Delaware on October 26, two against Binghamton on October 29 and the three against Northeastern. His 12 goals this season are the most for a Hofstra player since Michael Todd scored a dozen in 2005.
Hofstra will close out the regular season Tuesday night against Columbia. Kickoff at Hofstra Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
