Villa, BWP Anchor MLS Team of the Week

David Villa, Bradley-Wright Phillips and Luis Robles are on the MLS Team of the Week.

Major League Soccer’s Team of the Week for Week 16 is led by New York’s brace-brothers as New York City FC’s David Villa and Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips were named to the Starting XI.

Joining the two New York area goalscorers on the Team of the Week is Red Bulls netminder Luis Robles.

Villa led his teammates through the heavy rain that mucked up the Yankee Stadium pitch during NYC’s 2-1 win over defending the MLS Champions Seattle Sounders.

The City captain’s first tally — the 50th of his MLS career — came via a penalty kick at the 52nd minute. Villa would then put New York City ahead for good in the 77th minute as he volleyed home a pass from Jack Harrison.

For Wright-Phillips and his Red Bulls teammates, the heat on Father’s Day afternoon in Philadelphia was their weather challenge.

During the Eastern Conference matchup with the Union, Wright-Phillips had several scoring chances and was clearly frustrated by being unable to find the back of the net. But his persistence would pay off with goals in the 87th minute and a second tally two minutes into second-half stoppage time.

Robles earned his spot on the Team of the Week for his three saves, including an eye-catching stop in the 22nd minute. He also remains the ironman for Red Bulls, once again playing 90 minutes and overcoming a knock in the 23rd minute. The New York keeper is also nominated for MLS Save of the Week.
