New York City FC 1

Goals: NYCFC: 4’ Sean Okoli; RSL: 38’ Albert Rusnak (assist Jefferson Savarino), 51’ Aaron Maund (assist Albert Rusnak)

Overview: Disappointing could well be an understatement when discussing the performance and result from New York City FC’s trip to Rio Tinto Stadium. Real came into the match in a downward spiral and appeared to be easy pickings for NYCFC. In fact, an early goal by the Citizens offered some hope that three points could well be in the bag. But it was not to be. The defensive effort was poor and Salt Lake was afforded numerous opportunities at Sean Johnson’s net. Bringing David Villa and Jack Harrison on early in the second half provide a spark, but no goals for New York City.

Quotable:
NYCFC Head Coach Patrick Vieira…
“The defeat today is mine. It’s me who is responsible for the loss today because the selection of the team wasn’t good enough to compete against Salt Lake and I take full responsibility for the performance of the team today. I was thinking about the three games and of course, thinking game after game and the team selection wasn’t good. I again take full responsibility for the performance of the defeat. This is mine and this is my responsibility. I think we scored when we created chances it was a good finish from Ugo, but then we didn’t play enough. We were a little bit too deep and Salt Lake wanted it more than us. This is unacceptable.”
