Hofstra’s men’s soccer team scored twice seven minutes apart late in the second half to defeat Long Island University 2-1 Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The game-winning goal came in the 79th minute when George O’Malley scored his second of the season off of a corner kick from Adam Savill.
With the win, the Pride improved to 5-4-0 on the season. LIU falls to 4-5-0. The game was the first between the two Long Island-based universities since 1996.
The Sharks took a 1-0 lead just before halftime. Atha Coutroumpas scored off of a set-piece from 22-yards out as his shot curled into the upper right corner.

Hofstra’s equalizer would come in the 72nd minute. Hendrik Hebbeker dribbled through several LIU defenders and his left-foot shot went top shelf just inside the near post.
Long Island University played the final 16 minutes a man down after Keanu Tuart received a red card in the 74th minute.
Hofstra outshot LIU 17-13 (6-5 on goal) and led in corner kicks 9-7.
Alex Ashton had four saves in goal for the Pride while Matias Pesallaccia also had four saves for the Sharks.
Hofstra is back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. when it hosts UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. LIU will next face Merrimack College on Friday at 3 p.m. at LIU Soccer Park.
