Two Long Islanders are among the three players selected by Head Coach Simon Riddiough to be 2017 team captains for Hofstra’s Women’s Soccer Team.
“This group will continue to bring strong leadership to our team,” Riddiough said. “They are vocal leaders and leaders by example, bringing great work ethic and commitment to the team day in and day out.”
Gerdes, a native of Wantagh, New York, made her debut for the Pride last season as a junior after missing two seasons due to injury. She was an integral part of Hofstra’s defense and earned CAA All-Rookie Team honors.
A four-year varsity player at MacArthur High School in Levittown, Gerdes served as a captain in her junior and senior years. During her high school playing days, she was an All-State selection as a senior and won a New York State Championship as a sophomore.
Desmond, from East Northport, was an All-CAA Third-Team pick in 2016. A four-year varsity player at Northport High School, she scored 46 goals in her high school career and was named Long Island Player of the Year as a senior in 2013.
Cleverly adds an international flair to Hofstra’s trio of captains as she hails from Newport, Wales. In her career, she has appeared in 51 games for Hofstra, starting 45.
