Think American soccer fans are tired of celebrating the Women’s National Team’s World Cup victory?
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, more than 40,000 tickets have been sold for the U.S.-Costa Rica friendly set for Heinz Field on August 16. Ticket sales have surpassed the expectations of U.S. Soccer, which planned for about 20,000 fans at the home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
Given current ticket sales, the match would be the biggest home crowd for the women’s team in a stand-alone friendly. That record was set in April when 35,817 fans packed into St. Louis’ Busch Stadium for the U.S.-New Zealand match.
Whatever the final attendance figures will be in Pittsburgh, the figure will show the continued growth of soccer in America. Eleven years ago, the U.S. Women’s Team played at Heinz Field in front of 6,386 fans.
