SUSA Top Fury To Clinch WPSL Playoff Spot

It’s been quite the inaugural WPSL season for SUSA FC, and the team is now heading for the playoffs.

Under the warm summer sun Saturday at Bayport-Blue Point High School, SUSA closed out the regular season with a 7-1 win over Long Island Fury. The win, its seventh in eight games, gives head coach JR Balzarini’s team the Metropolitan Conference title and a spot in the league’s regional playoffs.

In its final regular season match, SUSA (7-1-0, W-L-D) had another strong offensive output as recent Sachem North graduate Jenna Blank notched a hat-trick, Kelly Marra scored twice and Rebecca Raber and Lauren Couto each chipped in with a goal.

Saturday’s win was the second time this season SUSA scored seven goals against Fury, previously winning 7-0 on June 9 at NYIT.

“Going into the season the goal was to prepare these girls for their college pre-seasons by playing quicker and being cleaner on the ball in possession,” Balzarini said. “I think we have achieved that and won some games along the way. I give all of the credit to the players for the time they have put into training and continuing to want to play this great game on a weekly basis. The game is about players.”

Specifics on playoff scheduling were not immediately available.
