A meeting of two Long Island teams in the Boys U-15 State Open Cup title game needed to be settled in a shootout.
And in the end, SUSA B04 defeated South Shore FC Bulldogs United 4-2 in the shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The teams met on June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y.
“I thought that we were a little bit faster and we managed the game well,” said Bouba Camara, SUSA’s head coach.
Tyler Axelsen scored SUSA’s goal in overtime. He also scored a shootout goal along with Douglas Abrego, Dylan Luciano and Danny Perry. Keeper Harry Huertas made two saves in the shootout.
SUSA will now represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association at the Regionals from June 28 to July 4 in Charleston, West Virginia, as part of the National Championship Series.
South Shore received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials. The award’s namesake founded the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s Sportsmanship Program in 1980.
