The first week of play in the 2018 United Women’s Soccer season began with a victory for one local team and a rainout for another.
In Worcester, Mass., the New York Surf started its second UWS season with a 1-0 win over Worcester Smiles. The game’s only goal came early as Maegan Doyle’s third-minute corner kick found teammate Salma Tarik.
Surf goalkeeper Jamie Block made three saves and Smiles keeper Brittany Henderson, who last played in the W-League in 2010 for the Long Island Rough Riders, made six saves.
In New Jersey, the matched between hosts New Jersey Copa FC and Long Island Rough Riders was postponed because of severe thunderstorms and lightning in the area around Saint John Vianney High School. The match will be scheduled in the coming days.
