Stony Brook Battles But Falls To Penn State

Coming out of the locker room at half-time there appeared to be an upset in the making as Stony Brook’s women’s soccer team held a 1-0 lead over Penn State.

But the Nittany Lions scored three times in the second half, including finding the back of the net twice in less than a minute to defeat the Seawolves 3-1 and advance in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. 

The America East champions close out the 2019 season, the first for head coach Tobias Bischof, with a record of 14-6-1.

Playing Friday night at Jeffrey Field at University Park, Pa., Stony Brook would take the lead in the 18th minute when Fanny Gӧtesson scored her 7th goal of the season. Gӧtesson’s goal was the program’s first in the NCAA Tournament.

The Seawolves would maintain that one-goal lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Penn State would level the match when Frankie Tagliaferri scored in the 49th minute. Less than a minute later, Sam Coffey would score to put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-1.

Penn State’s insurance goal would come in the 62nd minute as Kerry Abello put her shot into the upper right side of the goal. 

Stony Brook was outshot by Penn state 25-4 (12-2 on goal). Seawolves keeper Sofia Manner made nine saves.
