A 57th-minute goal by Crystal Dunn was the difference as the North Carolina Courage defeated Sky Blue FC 2-1 at Yurcak Field.

The loss to the defending NWSL champions was the first for interim head coach Freya Coombe who earlier in the week was named to the position.

North Carolina wasted little time getting on the board. In the 1st minute, a cross sent into the box by a Courage player deflected off the foot of Erica Skroski and into the Sky Blue goal for an early Carolina lead.

The home side would level the match in the 14th minute when Carli Lloyd would convert from the spot. The penalty was called against Courage defender Abby Dahlkemper who was whistled for taking down Sky Blue’s Paige Monaghan in the box.

With the score level at 1 into the second half, Dunn would give North Carolina the lead just prior to the hour mark.

The Rockville Centre native played the ball wide to Kristen Hamilton. She fought past two defenders and cut the ball back to Dunn. Unmarked at the top of the box, Dunn beat Sky Blue goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to the low left corner.

“I am pleased with the way we played in the first half,” said Coombe. “I think we created good chances (but) could have given a little bit more. Overall, it’s a good performance from the team.”

Sky Blue will be back at home on Sunday, September 15, at 5 p.m. to face Julie Ertz, Sam Kerr and the Chicago Red Stars for the club’s Petpalooza Day at Yurcak Field.
