Sky Blue FC now has a modest two-game unbeaten streak after its scoreless draw on the road against the defending NWSL champion North Carolina Courage.
Kailen Sheridan, who was named to the league’s Team of the Month in April, was again strong in goal for Sky Blue making three saves.
While SBFC’s defense kept the Courage off the scoreboard, its offense again struggled to find goals. Through the team’s first four matches of the 2019 season, Sky Blue has only two goals, which were scored in the Matchday 3 2-2 draw with the Portland Thorns.
Carli Lloyd, who is away with the U.S. Women’s National Team, has the team’s only two goals.
Coming off the 2018 season when the team won only once, there are signs of improvement with Sky Blue.
“I’m really proud of our effort, I think we are building each week and we are learning that we can weather the storms and also take it to teams,” said Sky Blue midfielder Imani Dorsey. “I think we can diversify our attack a little bit more but the chances we are getting on goal are quality and we are really creating opportunities for ourselves.“
While North Carolina outshot its visitors 28-8, Sky Blue did have opportunities to score.
The Blues started the second half strong earning a pair of corner kicks in the 49th minute but was unable to convert. However, four minutes later the teams were sent off because of bad weather.
“I wish we didn’t have the break, but I think we came out for the second half organized and had a few opportunities to get a result as well,” said Denise Reddy, the team’s head coach.
Savannah McCaskill gave Sky Blue some spark when she entered the match as a substitute. In the 65th minute, a cross sent in by Caprice Dydasco went off the head of Sarah Killion and McCaskill lined it up for a side volley towards the lower right corner of the goal. But a diving Courage keeper Stephanie Labbe kept it out.
Sky Blue had a late chance on goal in the 90th minute as McCaskill was charging at the Courage backline and passed the ball over to Dorsey. She collected and fired a low shot at the far post. But the scoring attempt was cleared off the line by North Carolina defender Merritt Mathias.
Sky Blue FC returns home on Saturday, May 11, to face the Washington Spirit at 3 p.m. ET on Champion Women Day. The team then travels west to face Reign FC (May 18, 4 p.m. ET) at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
