With the win, Long Island won its third match over a five day period and will now head to Grandville, MI, this weekend to play in the UWS National Championship. The semi-finals will be played on Friday, July 21, at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with the National Final set for Saturday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Following back-to-back home wins over New York Magic on Friday and Lancaster Inferno on Sunday, the Rough Riders made the trek to Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel, N.J., to face Copa FC. New Jersey’s only defeat this season was a 3-0 loss to Long Island on May 20.
With the match scoreless as the game clock wound toward halftime, Santoro (Islip) opened the scored in the 39th minute to give Long Island a 1-0 that it would take to halftime.
Six minutes into the second half Santoro would find the back of the net to double the Rough Riders lead. In the 55th minute, Taylor Elliott (Massapequa) would extend Long Island’s lead to 3-0 and Kimberly Marra (Sayville) in the 69th minute and Victoria Antonino (Howard Beach) in the 72nd minute would put the Rough Riders ahead 5-0.
