Led by Morgan Santoro’s two goals, the Long Island Rough Riders women earned their first win of the United Women’s Soccer season with its 5-2 over Western New York Flash.

The Rough Riders found themselves behind just two minutes in at D’Youville College as Erica Hubert gave Western New York an early lead. However, Long Island battled back and would hold a 2-1 lead at the half. Kayla Saager’s 29th-minute free kick snuck past the wall and into the low left corner to tie the score at 1. Seconds later, the Rough Riders found the back of the net again as Morgan Santoro latched on to a through ball from Kim Marra.

Long Island extended its advantage to 3-1 in the 58th minute as Francesca Venezia ripped a shot past Flash goalie Megan Tock. The club’s scoring continued as Saager found Santoro for another solid shot past Tock to make it 4-1. The home side answered back with a penalty kick, but the Rough Riders put the game to bed in the 67th minute. Laura Gomez received the ball over the top then lobbed a cross to the back post that was headed home by Venezia to seal all three points.

With a win in its pocket, Long Island was looking for a weekend sweep in upstate New York as it traveled to Rochester to face the Lancers.

Just as Long Island fell behind against Western New York, the Rough Riders found themselves trailing against the Lancers on Sunday. Brooke Barbuto put Rochester ahead in the 26th minute, a lead which held at halftime. The Rough Riders (1-1-1) responded with a goal by Gomez in the 73rd minute to earn a draw.

The Rough Riders entertain New York Surf (June 6) and Rochester (June 9) at Hofstra University Soccer Stadium before embarking on a two-game road trip.
