As a result, New York will face Alianza Futbol Club [El Salvador] and Antigua Futbol Club [Guatemala]. It is the third appearance for New York in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (2009-10; 2014-15). Alianza is making its second Champions League appearance (2011-12) while Antigua is making its first appearance.
By winning the 2015 Supporters’ Shield, the New York Red Bulls were one of the 24 qualified teams set to participate in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. During the draw, each of the clubs were sorted into eight groups of three teams for the Group Stage of the tournament. The Group Stage is set to take place from August to October 2016.
The 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League will qualify its champions directly to the FIFA Club World Cup 2017. Club America is the defending champion and will represent the Confederation later this year, in the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2016.
