NYIT Recap: Goals Galore For Men’s, Women’s Teams

The men’s and women’s soccer teams at NYIT each went 2-0 this past week as both sides continued to build strong starts to their respective seasons. The following cover matches from the week of September 17-23.

  • Men’s Soccer (5-1-1)

September 19 — at Nyack High School

Recap: Bernd Schlüter led the offensive with a hat-trick and Dan Lembo and Nuno Mecia each tallied goals for the Bears. Keeper Andrew Pereira played 74 minutes and had three saves while Pol Zapata had two saves in 16 minutes of action.

September 22 — President’s Stadium, NYIT

Recap: Bernd Schlüter stayed hot and following his three-goal performance vs. Nyack just days earlier with a brace, both goals coming in the first half to stake the Bears to a 2-0 lead. But UDC would tie the game before Bay Shore’s Wilber Gomez would score the game-winner — and his first of the season — for NYIT in the 86th minute.

Recap: Jess Hawley scored in the first-half and Casey Luongo tallied in the 84th minute to lead the Bears offense. Reigning East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week goalkeeper Jessie Sabal and the Bears have now recorded three straight clean sheets. Sabal recorded the 12th shutout of her career, matching a program record set by Jenna Ament from 2005 through 2008.

Recap: Sophomore Casey Luongo of Center Moriches had her first career hat trick and freshman Maggie Thibault of Baldwin notched the first two goals of her collegiate career. The win extended NYIT’s winning streak to and consecutive clean sheets to four. The Bears have not allowed a goal in 366 minutes, 17 seconds. With six wins in eight matches, the team is off to its best start in 15 years.
