The Bears were represented on the men’s side by Xavi Senlik of Ronkonkoma who was named the conference Player of the Week.
After missing the first four games of the season as she battled a quadriceps injury, Franco has played a key role in NYIT’s offense. This past week, she scored the game-tying goal in the 86th minute as the Bears and LIU Post played to a 2-2 draw.
Luongo had a big week for NYIT with a goal vs. LIU Post and two goals in a 3-2 loss to Bridgeport. She now has scored seven goals in the team’s past seven games.
With Franco and Luongo helping to lead the way, NYIT women’s soccer is close to earning the program’s first preseason berth. With two ECC matches remaining, the Bears are a point ahead of Daemen for the league’s fourth and final postseason tournament spot.
Senlik first career hat trick, which came in a victory against Molloy, was a key factor in his Player of the Week honor. He also assisted on NYIT’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Bridgeport.
His 15 points for the season, on six goals and three assists, ranking second on the team. The sophomore biology major from Ronkonkoma has produced all six of his goals in the last four matches.
The NYIT men currently own a 7-4-1 overall record and 3-2-1 mark in the ECC. With 10 points, the Bears are sixth in the ECC standings, trailing Mercy (15 points), St. Thomas Aquinas (15), LIU Post (12), Bridgeport (12) and Queens (12). The top four teams qualify for the ECC tournament.
