First-half goals from Alexandru Mitriță and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi propelled New York City FC (NYCFC) to a 2-1 win over DC United in a Round of 16 U.S. Open Cup match.

The win moved New York City into the tournament’s quarterfinals for the first time in team history. Up next is Orlando City SC on July 10 at Orlando City Stadium.

In a match pitting two Eastern Conference rivals from Major League Soccer, D.C. United would open the scoring. Former Premier League star Wayne Rooney scored found the back of the next in the 32nd minute off a long pass from Ulises Segura to give the home side a one-goal lead.

But United’s lead would not last for long. In the 38th minute, Mitriță worked his way through the defense after receiving a long pass from Keaton Parks. The Romanian would slot the ball home past keeper Chris Seitz to level the match at one.

The eventual match-winner would come three minutes later as  Tajouri-Shradi’s left foot shot found the back of the net to give New York City a 2-1 lead.

“I’m very happy because when you are here, you have to try and win the game,” said Doménec Torrent, NYCFC’s head coach. “I’m very happy because we played again five in the back, when we don’t have the ball and the reason why is because they play wide all the time and I thought it was the best way to defend. Then we get the ball for attack and I am very happy for that.”
