New York City FC is adding a veteran presence to its roster with the signing of Eloi Amagat as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Girona FC of La Liga.
The 33-year old midfielder is New York City’s first midseason addition and will join the club subject to his P1 Visa and ITC.
“I am very excited,” Amagat told NYCFC.com. “I have spoken with (head coach Doménec Torrent) several times and he has spoken wonders of the club and also of the city. It’s an important challenge for me and I have a lot of desire to join this club.”
He began his professional career with Girona FC in 2004 and helped the team gain promotion to the Segunda División for the first time in 49 years in 2008. Following a stop with Lorca Deportiva and 21 goals in 90 appearances with Llagostera, Amagat returned to Girona in 2012. He played 16 matches in the 2016-17 campaign as Girona gained promotion to La Liga, the top division in Spain, for the first time in club history. The midfielder made his debut in the Spanish top flight on February 16, 2018.
Amagat and Torrent have worked together previously at Girona when the team finished top of their group in the Spanish Tercera Division.
“Eloi has the quality to keep the ball and is able to do key passes for our striker and has absolute control when he plays in the midfield,” said Torrent. “He can play as a 6, 8 or a 10 and, for me, it is important to have versatile players that can play in different positions. He has a lot of quality and I think he can help us in the midfield.”
