New York City FC’s Protected List for the Major League Soccer Expansion Draft includes many expected names and one that may surprise a few.
The list included MLS MVP David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, Jack Harrison, Sean Johnson, RJ Allen, Maxime Chanot, Frederic Brillant, Ronald Matarrita, Mix Diskerud, Mikey Lopez, Tommy McNamara and Khiry Shelton. Diskerud’s inclusion on the Protected List might come as a surprise to some since he has been out of favor with NYCFC head coach Patrick Vieira.
Published reports have indicated that NYCFC have been trying to trade Diskerud, who saw little action in the back half of the 2016 season.
The Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday, starting at 2 p.m. eastern time with Atlanta United and Minnesota United selecting players to build their respective teams for their first seasons in MLS. Each team can select a maximum of one unprotected player from each of the 20 teams, selecting five players apiece to build up their 2017 roster. After a player is selected from a club’s unprotected list, that club is removed from the Expansion Draft process.
