Following its second season that included the team’s first postseason appearance, New York City FC is beginning to shape its roster for 2017 by exercising the options for several key players.
Returning for 2017 will be RJ Allen, Frederic Brillant, Eirik Johansen, Ronald Matarrita, Tommy McNamara, Andre Rawls and Khiry Shelton. In addition, NYCFC have agreed terms on new deals for defender Ethan White and midfielder Mikey Lopez, while the Club has also finalized a transfer agreement with Trinidadian side W Connection for Shannon Gomez, exercising his contract option.
Several members of the 2016 team including Connor Brandt, Jason Hernandez, Diego Martinez and Tony Taylor will not have their contract options exercised.
As previously reported, Frank Lampard is leaving the team after his contract expires and Mehdi Ballouchy and Andoni Iraola have each announced their retirements.
“I want to express the club’s gratitude to those players who are leaving us for their service and for being part of this historic season which saw us reach the MLS Playoffs for the first time,” said Claudio Reyna, the team’s sporting director. “Every single one of these guys contributed towards the team reaching the postseason for the first time and they will forever be part of this club’s history, even if their journey with NYCFC is ending.”
