On Wednesday, third-seeded Toronto earned a spot in the semis with a 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union at BMO Field. Goals from Sebastian Giovinco, Jonathan Osorio and Jozy Altidore gave the Canadian side their first-ever MLS Playoffs win.
This season, NYCFC took two points from Toronto in the team’s two meetings, both of which ended in draws — 2-2 on March 13 at Yankee Stadium and 1-1 on May 18 at BMO Field.
The first match in the two leg series will be held Sunday, October 30, in Toronto. The return match will be held Sunday, November 6, at Yankee Stadium.
In an interview with NYCFC.com, New York City midfielder Tommy McNamara said of the matchup with Toronto, “They’re a very good team. They only finished a couple of points behind us and they’ve just got (Sebastian) Giovinco back who is a very strong player in this league. It’ll be a tough game, going up there away because they have a large crowd and a great field.”
