New York City FC has outlined the various possibilities regarding the team’s home pitch during the upcoming Major League Soccer playoffs and how the team will handle potential conflicts with the playoff-bound New York Yankees.
NYCFC will open the playoffs on either October 23 or 24 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. The Conference finals are scheduled for October 29 or 30 with New York City hosting should they advance.
The simplest scenario involves the Yankees losing the American League Divisional Series to the Minnesota Twins. Should that happen, all conflicts would be eliminated and NYCFC would play all games at Yankee Stadium.
However, should the Yankees defeat the Twins, things get a bit complicated and CitiField comes into play.
- The Yankees advance to the League Championship Series but the series ends in five games or less and they do not advance: New York City will host the Conference Semi-Final and Conference Final at Yankee Stadium
- The League Championship series extends to six or seven games and the Yankees do not advance: New York City will host the Conference Semi-Final at CitiField and the Conference Final at Yankee Stadium.
- The Yankees reach the World Series: all NYCFC playoff games shift to CitiField.
“We’re extremely proud of the team’s achievement this season and finishing top of the Eastern Conference will provide us with a great platform as we enter our fourth consecutive playoff campaign,” said Claudio Reyna, NYCFC’s Sporting Director. “Should Yankee Stadium be unavailable, we feel extremely comfortable playing our games at CitiField which has proven to be an excellent alternative venue for the Club.”
New York City is no stranger to the home of the New York Mets. NYCFC closed out the 2017 regular season at CitiField playing to a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew.
