In their first game as the Sharks, the LIU men’s soccer team took a late bite out of Old Dominion University in a 2-1 win at the ODU Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Va.
Freshman Papa Ndoye scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 86th minute that allowed LIU to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
“In sport, no individual can win a game,” said Michael Mordocco, LIU’s head coach. “It takes effort from the entire team. They believe in each other and showed tremendous maturity and resilience. We still need to improve, get better and then do it again.”
Ndoye and sophomore Athanasios Coutroumpas each scored a goal. Ndoye also had three shots on goal and four shots total. In addition to his goal, Coutroumpas had two shots on goal and three total shots.
Junior Chris Capaldo of Smithtown and sophomore Luke Kasulke of Seaford each had an assist while sophomore Javier Rehberger also had one shot on goal and two shots total.

A scoreless match past the hour mark, ODU would take the lead in the 62nd minute when Sebastien Hauret would find the back of the net.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Coutroumpas would bring LIU level heading in a pass from Capaldo for a goal in the 83rd minute.
Four minutes later, Ndoye would find the back of the net for the match-winner using his left foot to send the ball into the left side of the net off an assist by Kasulke.
LIU will stay in the state of Virginia to face Virginia Commonwealth University on Labor Day. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
