The man known as the little magician will be in New York City FC sky blue for another two seasons.
NYCFC and All-Star midfielder Maxi Moralez have agreed to a new two-year Designated Player contract. Since his arrival from Mexican side Club Léon prior to the start of the 2017 season, the Argentinian has appeared in 89 matches with 20 goals and 45 assists.
He recently became only the third player in Major League Soccer history to hit the 20 assist mark in a single season. His 45 career assists are also a team record.
“I’m very happy to extend my contract with the club for two more years,” Moralez said. “I want to thank the club and the fans for letting me be a part of this team. The decision was easy because we are a family and when you feel that way it makes it easier.
This summer, Moralez for the first time was named to the 2019 MLS All-Star team. He joined David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, and current club captain Alex Ring as the only New York City players to be named All-Stars.
“Since he joined our club three years ago, his contributions on and off the pitch have been clear to everyone,” said Claudio Reyna, NYCFC’s Sporting Director. “He’s accepted his role as a leader within the team and his influence on the pitch has been tremendous.”
Moralez is the sixth New York City player to sign a contract extension over the past 12 months. He joins midfielder Alex Ring; defenders Alex Callens, Maxime Chanot, and Anton Tinnerholm; and goalkeeper Sean Johnson as players who have committed their long-term futures to the club.
