Two of the three final East Coast Conference (ECC) weekly women’s soccer awards are staying here on Long Island and being awarded to Long Islanders.
Molloy College freshman Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville) and Jackie Carty (East Islip) were named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 9. Combined the rookie pairing has claimed eight weekly awards this season from the ECC.
Poetzsch was honored following a week in which the forward netted four goals, including scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Daemen to clinch Molloy’s first ECC Championship appearance since 2011. She also added a goal in the Lions’ 4-1 win over Jefferson.
It has been a stellar first season at Molloy for Poetzsch, who started 15 of the Lions 17 regular season matches and has a league-leading 16 goals and 34 points. She scored two or more goals five times this season, including hat-tricks against Georgian Court University on September 28 and Daemen on October 28.
Carty’s award comes following a week in which she made 10 saves, including five in the victory over Jefferson. In the Daemen game, she added three saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season and help send Molloy to the ECC postseason tournament.
Also in her first collegiate season, Carty has been a fixture in the Molloy goal. She finished the regular season with seven clean sheets, a 1.13 goals against average and a .821 save percentage.
The third-seeded Lions will take on the second-seeded Mavericks of Mercy College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
