The women’s soccer team at Molloy College is making the most of the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament.
After back-to-back wins, the Lions are in the East Region Finals where they will meet The College of Saint Rose on Friday, December 6, in Albany.
Molloy opened the tournament on November 22 with a 1-0 win over Bentley University. Eleni Sofroniou of Dix Hills scored the game’s lone goal in the 69th minute.
Two days later, the Lions needed penalty kicks to defeat Mercy College. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw but the Lions topped Mercy 3-1 in penalties. Lauren Marinello of Merrick scored for Molloy in the 47th minute. In penalties, Dana Poetzsch, Lexi Verni and Sabrina Bell each converted from the spot.
Lions keeper Jackie Carty of East Islip made two saves in penalties to help secure the win.
The Golden Knights of Saint Rose have had a strong season and come into the match with Molloy (15-4-3) with a record of 19-2-1. On offense, Saint Rose is led by senior Nina Predanic who has 19 goals and Olivia Boucher of Sayville who has 12 goals.
