Freshman Stefan Mason’s first collegiate goal came at an opportune time for Hofstra’s men’s soccer team in the Pride’s 3-2 win over Elon on Saturday.

The win moves Hofstra to 4-3-0 (2-1-0 CAA) on the season.

The native of Knowle, United Kingdom, scored in the 77th minute to put Hofstra ahead for good. On the play, Etienne Botty controlled the ball into the Elon penalty area and moved the ball to New Hyde Park’s Matthew Vowinkel. He neatly hit an over-the-shoulder touch pass to Mason who found the back of the net.

Hofstra came out firing early and would take the lead thanks to goals by Vowinkel in the 2nd minute and Petter Soelberg in the 4th minute to put the Pride ahead 2-0.

But Elon would regroup and stage a second-half comeback. Goals by John Walden in the 49th minute and Iñigo Bronte in the 66th minute would bring the Phoenix to within one. However, Elon would get no closer.

Vowinkel led Hofstra with four shots while Soelberg and Storm Strongin of Hicksville had three shots each. In goal, keeper Alex Ashton made one save and earned the victory.

The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday for a non-conference meeting at Marist. Kickoff in Poughkeepsie is set for 7 p.m.
