A goal by Tara Lyons with two minutes remaining in the first half was all that Farmingdale State needed to defeat Brandeis 1-0 on Saturday.

With the win, the Rams advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament. The match between the two top-25 teams was played at The College of New Jersey. It is also the first time the FSC has advanced to the tournament’s second round.

The game’s lone goal was scored through a somewhat unusual play. Lyons, a Wantagh native, intercepted a pass and shot the ball from about 35 yards out. The ball deflected off a Brandeis defender, caromed off the crossbar and over the goal line.

The Rams were outshot 7-3 in the first half and 6-0 in the second half. But goalkeeper Daniella Ford of Elmont again provided the defensive backbone. She made six saves to earn her ninth solo clean sheet of the season, which ties a school record.

Farmingdale State will meet host school #7 TCNJ on Sunday at 1 p.m.
