LIU Post’s men’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the East Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, finishing five points behind No. 1 University of the District of Columbia.

The Pioneers received 88 total points and four first-place votes. Fellow Long Island-based colleges NYIT came in fourth with 74 points while Molloy is ranked seventh with 42 points.

While ECC coaches expected UDC to be the conference’s top team, LIU Post is highly ranked in the national United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division II Men’s Preseason Poll. The USC poll, released August 7, has the Pioneers ranked No. 6.

LIU Post’s ranking also marks the first time since 2011 that the Pioneers have not started the season as the favorite to capture the league’s championship. The team, which won their fifth ECC title in six years and third NCAA East Region Championship in four years last season, will take to the pitch this season under new head coach, Michael Mordocco.

However, the team has lost several key players including five All-Conference honorees from last year’s roster. That said, ECC Goalkeeper of the Year, Oliver Hessner Hansen, and Rookie of the Year, Lukas Ostermann, return for LIU Post.
