The men’s soccer teams from LIU Post and Adelphi advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II tournament, and will now face each other on Thursday.

It was a 29th minute goal from midfielder Alex Billington that gave LIU Post a 1-0 win Saturday over Merrimack College in the DII tournament’s second round at Pioneer Soccer Park.

According to a match report from LIU Post, Billington’s goal came on a penalty kick, after midfielder Charlie Ledula was fouled in the box by Merrimack goalkeeper Cody Russell.

Over at Adelphi, a 63rd minute goal was all the Panthers need as they defeated Southern New Hampshire University 1-0. The game’s lone goal came off a set-piece about 10-yards outside the penalty box. Joseph Sanchez sent in an attempt that Nick Zucco tipped off the crossbar and to the feet of Federico De Oliveira. The NE-10 Player of the Year followed with a shot from the left post to the right side of the net to give the Panthers the lead.

Adelphi goalkeeper Spenser Powell made three of his five saves in the final 27 minutes to preserve the team’s 13th shutout of the season, a new program record. In addition, the 18 wins on the season increases a school record. The victory also marks the first win in NCAA Division II Tournament play since 1975, when the Panthers defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 9-1.
