Long Island rivals LIU Post and Adelphi will meet again, this time in the NCAA Division II Tournament’s Round of 16.
On Saturday, LIU Post punched its ticket to the Third Round with a 2-1 win over the University of the District of Columbia. Adelphi needed extra time in its 2-1 win over Goldey-Beacom.
The Pioneers and Panthers will meet on November 16 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Both LIU Post and Adelphi needed late heroics to each secure their victories.
Pioneers junior Charlie Ledula’s goal in the 85th minute was the difference for LIU Post in the win. With the game tied at 1, sophomore back Mike Sutton made a run down the right side and sent a cross into the box that found the head of Ledula.
LIU Post took an early lead when Lukas Ostermann dribbled through a pair of UDC defenders and found the back of the net just 7 minutes in.
Oliver Hessner Hansen turned aside two shots during his 90 minutes between the pipes for the green and gold, while his counterpart Ever Alvarez made six stops on the afternoon.
Adelphi late magic came from Andre De Giorgi, who scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute and Joseph Sanchez, who netted the game-winner in overtime to cap a stunning 2-1 comeback win over Goldey-Beacom and put the Panthers in the East Region final for the second consecutive year.
Despite dominating play and outshooting the Lightning 34-5, Adelphi struggled to break through on the scoreboard before De Giorgi’s goal. With the game tied deep into extra time, penalty kicks appeared to be on the horizon. However, De Giorgi would have a role in the game winner as he chipped a pass to Sanchez who blasted a shot from the top of the box.
The upcoming meeting between LIU Post and Adelphi will be the second time the teams have met this season. The two played to a thrilling 3-3 extra time draw at Adelphi’s Motamed Field on August 31.
